Walking Route Highlights Berlin
Each city has its own sights worth visiting. In this article you get an overview of some of the most important spots in the center of Berlin and beyond with a free route.
Practical Information Walking Route Highlights Berlin
To visit all the sights you can follow the blue signs that can be found throughout the city. These will show you the way to the nearest point of interest. However, if you don’t feel like figuring this out yourself, our Google Maps travel guide Berlin can offer a solution.
You should allocate a full day for this route, especially if you also want to visit the museums along the way. These are not included in the itinerary now, because wetraveloutdoor is simply not that interested in visiting museums. Nevertheless, you can also learn more about the history of Berlin while following this route. There are several stops where you walk past informative signs.
Make sure you buy a metro ticket (AB will do for this route). Parts of the route are also traveled by metro. That can be very pleasant in the winter months because you are outside a lot. Of course you can also choose to do everything on foot or even by bike.
All stops on this route are free, the only thing you pay for are the metro tickets.

Walking Route Highlights Berlin
Treptower Park (1)
Treptower Park is a great start of your citytrip Berlin. You can enjoy the peace and quiet here and you can make the walk through the park as big as you want.

Oberbaumbrücke (2)
From Treptower Park you walk via the main roads to the Oberbaumbrücke. What you can also do is take the metro, because the part between the park and the bridge is not very special.
East Side Gallery (3)
On the remaining parts of the Berlin Wall, graffiti works have been applied by various artists on a route of 1.3 kilometers. It is worth reading the information boards that you will find at both the artworks and along the wall. Here you can read exactly what happened all those years ago.

Alexanderplatz, World Time Clock and Fernsehturm (4)
Alexanderplatz was fairly quiet (morning, February 2023) so there was plenty of time to shoot some nice pictures of the World Time Clock and the Fernsehturm. You can also get to the Fernsehturm, so allow more time for the walking route if you actually want to do this.
Church of Berlin and Altes Museum (5)
Every city has a church and Berlin’s is also very beautiful to see, especially because it is located along the water. You can visit the cathedral and get a guided tour. On the same square you will also find the old museum of Berlin.
Haus Schwarzenberg (6)
A lesser-known spot in Berlin, but very nice to take in during your walking route along the sights of Berlin. Haus Schwarzenberg is a kind of art gallery with a small museum where you can learn more about the life of Anne Frank.

Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer (7)
One of the highlights of the walking route is the Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer. You mainly walk outside past all the informative signs where you learn more about the things that happened here all those years ago. It is very interesting to read everything. Tip: cross the street at the end of the Gedenkstätte. You can climb a staircase through the museum so that you have a view over a part of the city and the wall.
Brandenburger Tor and Reichstag (8)
The Brandenburger Tor is a well-known landmark of Berlin. It is very busy and many people want to shoot the ultimate picture. So you definitely won’t have this place to yourself. The Reichstag building (parliament building with a glass dome) is located near the Brandenburger Tor and you can also visit it during this walk. You buy the tickets on the spot or in advance, after which you can enter the building yourself.

Holocaustmonument (9)
This is a place where the murdered Jews are remembered. The idea behind this is very nice, but the place itself looks very messy. There is a lot of rubbish between the memorial stones.
Potsdammer Platz and Topographie des Terrors (10)
Potsdammer Platz is a well-known and busy square in Berlin and is a nice stopover during the walking route. It is a busier area with shops and restaurants. More interesting, however, is the outdoor museum Topographie des Terrors a little further on. If you want to read everything, you should definitely set aside an hour for this.

Checkpoint Charlie (11)
You end the walking route along the sights of Berlin with a visit to Checkpoint Charlie. In the winter months it is not very busy here, so you can take a good photo. Yet it is all very overdone and no longer authentic at all. Are you interested in museums? From Checkpoint Charlie and Potsdammer Platz you can make a detour past the Berlin Story Bunker (tickets on site for 10 euros, 2023) or the Jewish Museum.

Sachsenhausen (12)
Sachsenhausen is not included in the Berlin sightseeing tour. It is better to visit this concentration camp on a separate day. Read more about Sachsenhausen in our article with tips about this concentration camp.
