Ireland

Rugged cliffs, winding roads, and charming villages. That’s where Ireland is known for. It is a travel destination that’s still relatively unknown to the majority of travelers. We flew to Dublin in the spring of 2024 for a 10-day road trip through the country. We gathered all the most useful travel information for your trip to Ireland!

10 Day Itinerary Ireland and Northern Ireland

For this trip, we rented a car. You could probably do the journey using public transport, but without the flexibility. Ireland mainly consists of villages scattered across vast landscapes, so public transport is limited in many areas. We rented through Sunnycars. They offer an all-in price with full insurance and free cancellation up to one hour before pick-up. In both countries you drive on the left side of the road!

Visa and Entry Requirements
Ireland is part of the EU, but Northern Ireland part of the United Kingdom. We didn’t need a visa as visitors from EU, but this could change in future (especially for the UK). For the latest information, always make sure to check the latest travel advice.
Travel Budget and Currency
Both countries are priced similarly to other (Western) European countries. So, it’s not too expensive, but it’s definitely not a cheap destination either! In Northern Ireland, you pay with British Pounds, distances are in miles, and speeds are in MPH. In Ireland, they use Euros and kilometers!

Climate and Weather in Ireland
When you think of Ireland, you probably think of rain! Unfortunately, there is no escape to the rainy climate, so don’t expect sunshine all week, or you’ll probably get disappointed. However, Ireland can have some pretty good weather as well! We even had a few sunny days in the spring of 2024. The ocean has a large impact on the weather. Winters are never extremely cold, and summers don’t usually get too hot either.

Peak and Low Season
The peak season in Ireland is from June to August, during the summer months. These are the busiest and most expensive months of the year. We traveled in the spring and thought it was a great time to visit. It was relatively quiet, not too expensive and the weather was decent too.
Popular Travel Attractions
The island is mostly hilly, with the highest peaks reaching around 1,000 meters above sea level. Especially along the west coast, the terrain is more rugged and sometimes you really feel like you’re driving through the mountains. On the east side, the terrain is more flat. Ireland is most famous for its rugged cliffs, like the famous Cliffs of Moher along the stunning Wild Atlantic Way. More travel information on sights in Ireland?

Ireland is a safe country and has great healthcare too. We even drank tap water there. But make sure you have travel insurance for emergencies. Always make sure to have travel insurance for emergencies and check whether you need any additional measures such as vaccinations.
Culture and Traditions in Ireland
Irish culture is deeply connected to Celtic traditions. You’ll also see the Irish language everywhere: almost all information is written in both English and Irish (Gaelic). Music and social gatherings are a big part of daily life in Ireland. This is reflected in the many pubs across the country! Don’t forget to try a Guinness or Whiskey tasting! We found Northern Ireland to be pretty similar in that regard.
