How to Get to Wahiba Sands in Oman

There are day tours from Muscat to the desert, but driving yourself is absolutely possible too. However, you’ll need a 4×4 vehicle if you want to drive into the desert—this is not doable with a regular 2WD car!

Tip: Follow our 12-day Oman itinerary for all the best stops.

Where to Stay in Wahiba Sands Oman

Since we didn’t rent a 4×4, we chose to stay on the edge of Wahiba Sands. Even from this location, you’re completely surrounded by towering sand dunes. You won’t even notice you’re at the edge! The camels roaming near the accommodation really completed the desert atmosphere. And how about a swimming pool with a view of the desert?

We stayed at Sand House, which is easily accessible, has a pool, and great air conditioning! We also arranged a dune bashing tour through the host.

What to Do in Wahiba Sands Oman

If you have a 4×4, you can drive through the desert yourself. However, for dune bashing, we definitely recommend going with a guide. We went out for an hour with an experienced driver. We even got to take the wheel ourselves for a bit! It turned out to be easier than expected. Ready to give it a try?

Most dune bashing tours also include a visit to a traditional Bedouin home, where you’ll be served tea and dates, and have the option to take a camel ride. We skipped the camel ride ourselves.
