Things To Do in Nizwa Oman
Nizwa, the former capital of Oman, is a charming and atmospheric town. The moment you arrive, you’re immersed in traditional Omani culture. It’s no wonder Nizwa is a must-visit on any road trip through Oman. But what exactly is there to see and to do? In this article you’ll find some things to do in Nizwa, Oman.

Nizwa Fort and Castle
Right in the heart of Nizwa’s old town stands an impressive fort alongside a historic castle. You can visit them both for a small fee. Climb to the top of the fort for sweeping views over the city.
Nizwa Souq
Nizwa is also home to a large souq (market). Wander through stalls selling traditional goods and sample the fragrant local spices. There’s a separate section for just about everything (spices, vegetables, fish, even pottery)! Compared to the bustling souq in Muttrah, the Nizwa Souq feels more relaxed, allowing you to browse peacefully without constant calls from vendors.
Goat Market Nizwa
Every Friday morning, Nizwa hosts its traditional goat market. It’s definitely worth checking out as it’s a vivid glimpse into local life and culture. We’ve written a separate article all about our experience of the goat market in Nizwa.

Things to Do Near Nizwa, Oman
We spent a full day exploring Nizwa, which also gave us time to consider a visit to nearby Jabreen Castle. In the end, we decided to skip it, as we weren’t aiming to visit every fort and castle in the country.
Tip: Check out our Google Maps guide Oman, where we’ve pinned all the places we visited during our road trip.
