Ushuaia Argentina: Things to do in Ushuaia!

Ushuaia, also known as El Fin del Mundo (the End of the World), is the southernmost city on Earth. During our world trip in 2025, we traveled through Patagonia and made a stop in Ushuaia. Below you’ll find a collection of our tips, plus a handy Google Maps guide with hiking routes for Ushuaia Argentina!

Antarctica

Let’s start right away with the most expensive tour option. From Ushuaia, cruises to Antarctica depart between October and March. Unsurprisingly, this is a costly adventure, with prices starting at around USD 6,000 per person. And even at that price, you’ll need to search hard (and get lucky) to find availability. A cruise to Antarctica is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but unfortunately not affordable for every traveler. We were hoping to score a good last-minute deal, but those days seem to be over.

Beagle Channel Boat Tour

If Antarctica isn’t an option, a few-hour boat trip on the Beagle Channel is a great alternative (although you won’t see icebergs here). You can spot sea lions and penguins, though. The tour is relatively expensive considering you don’t spend much time near the wildlife and are cruising on the boat for most of the trip.

Be sure to check the weather forecast in advance and stay flexible, as weather conditions have a big impact on the experience. We booked last-minute with Tolkeyen Patagonia, but you can also find similar tours at the same price on Getyourguide.

Hike to Martial Glacier (Ushuaia)

From Ushuaia, you can do a day hike to the Martial Glacier. We created a GPX file for this hike so you can easily follow the route. It’s not entirely clear whether there’s an entrance fee for this trail. We didn’t pay anything, but we followed a slightly different loop.

If you follow our route clockwise, you should be able to reach the glacier trail without paying an entrance fee.

Laguna Esmeralda

Laguna Esmeralda is located about 20 kilometers from Ushuaia and can easily be reached from the city center by Uber. The trail is well marked, although we encountered a lot of mud due to heavy rainfall. Good hiking shoes are highly recommended. If you wear sneakers, you’ll end up with wet socks very quickly.

You can also take an Uber back after the hike, as there is decent mobile coverage at the parking area. This works best if you’re using a local SIM card or an Airalo eSIM.

With the code MEIKE4858, you’ll receive a discount on your first Airalo purchase.
