Oman Travel Itinerary: the Best Route in Oman!
Tucked away on the southeastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, Oman is a rising destination among travelers looking for something unique. With its traditional architecture, warm desert climate, and friendly locals, Oman offers a surprising range of natural beauty and cultural heritage. We explored the country in the spring of 2025 and were blown away by how much it has to offer. In this guide, we share the best Oman travel itinerary for a two-week road trip.

Day 1: Arrival at Muscat International Airport
Accommodation: Centara Life Muscat Dunes Hotel or 4 Guys Hotel
Most international travelers will begin and end their Oman adventure at Muscat International Airport. We flew overnight from Frankfurt with a direct Oman Air flight, arriving early in the morning. Tired from the journey, we used this day to rest and pick up our rental car before heading straight to our hotel.

Days 2 & 3: Exploring Muscat
Accommodation: Centara Life Muscat Dunes Hotel of 4 Guys Hotel
Highlights: Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque (1), Muttrah Fort & Souq (2), Al Alam Palace (3)
Muscat isn’t built around a centralized downtown, so having a rental car is essential, even within the city. Key sites include the majestic Grand Mosque, the atmospheric Mutrah Souq, and the Royal Opera House. If you’re short on time, you could cut Muscat to one day, but you’d miss out on some must-see spots.
Day 4: Muscat to Sur (via Bimmah Sinkhole & Wadi Shab)
Distance: 200 km (2 hours)
Accommodation: Arkan Al Barzah Hotel Apartment
Highlights: Bimmah Sinkhole (4), Hidden Beach, Wadi Ash Shab (5)
We began our road trip heading south along the coast. While the Bimmah Sinkhole was a quick stop, Wadi Shab was a standout with its stunning hike and turquoise pools. Hidden Beach is another tranquil option if you’re seeking a quieter spot along the way.
Day 5: Relax during your Oman Travel Itinerary in Al Hadd
Distance: 50 km (1 hour)
Accommodation: Private Rooms in Shared Beach Chalet (no longer bookable online)
Highlights: Turtle spotting, quiet beaches
We kept this day slow-paced, driving just a short distance to Al Hadd. This gave us extra time to explore Sur, including its charming traditional souq. Although we skipped a turtle tour (which receives mixed reviews), some travelers report spotting turtles at dawn directly on the beach.
Day 6: Sur to Wahiba Sands (via Wadi Bani Khalid)
Distance: 300 km (3–4 hours)
Accommodation: Sand House
Highlights: Wadi Bani Khalid (6), Wahiba Sands (now Sharqiya Sands, 7)
After breakfast in Sur, we visited Wadi Bani Khalid: our favorite wadi in Oman! It’s ideal for swimming and less crowded than Wadi Shab. We then drove along the coastal route to the edge of the Wahiba Sands desert, passing through scenic villages and beaches.
Day 7: Desert Experience in Wahiba Sands
Accommodation: Sand House
Activities: Dune bashing, desert sunset, stargazing
The orange dunes of the Wahiba Sands provide that classic desert experience. We stayed in one place and joined a local tour to explore the area, though it’s also possible to self-drive with a 4×4 or book an overnight safari. You can organise this tour via your accommodation, simply ask!
Day 8: Wahiba Sands to Al Hamra
Distance: 350 km (3–4 hours)
Accommodation: Alshuruq Stay
Highlights: Wadi Tanuf, Al Hamra (9), Jabreen Castle, Bahla Fort
Today’s drive took us inland toward the historic town of Al Hamra. En route, we visited Wadi Tanuf, which was dry at the time, but still scenic. Al Hamra itself is surrounded by date palms and old mudbrick homes. We were treated to Omani coffee and fruit by the friendly host and his family.
Day 9: Hiking the Balcony Walk in Jabal Shams
Accommodation: Alshuruq Stay
Highlights: Balcony Walk hike (10)
This iconic hike takes place on the cliffs of Jabal Shams, Oman’s highest mountain. The drive to the start point was adventurous, with parts of the road still unpaved. Day 10: Nizwa – Oman’s Cultural Capital
Distance: 50 km (1 hour)
Accommodation: IHYAA Inn Nizwa
Highlights: Nizwa Fort, Nizwa Souq, Nizwa (8)
Nizwa is a compact yet culturally rich town, formerly Oman’s capital. Its fort and lively souq are well worth exploring. After a more active day in the mountains, Nizwa offered a relaxing change of pace.
Day 11: Nizwa to Muscat + Snorkeling in the Daymaniyat Islands
Distance: 200 km (2 hours)

Highlights: Nizwa goat market, Daymaniyat Islands snorkeling tour (11)
Friday morning is goat market day in Nizwa, and it’s a real local spectacle. We visited early, then drove back to Muscat for a spectacular snorkeling tour in the Daymaniyat Islands. Swimming with sea turtles in crystal-clear waters was the perfect way to wrap up our trip.
Day 12: Last Day of the Oman Travel Itinerary
Our 2-week Oman travel itinerary came to an end with a smooth flight home. Oman exceeded our expectations with its natural diversity, warm hospitality, and manageable travel distances. If you have more time, consider adding Salalah in the south or even a quick side trip to Dubai.

Two weeks in Oman is the ideal amount of time to experience the country at a relaxed pace. Unlike the rushed 8- or 9-day itineraries, this route allows for city exploration, scenic hikes, beach relaxation, and desert adventures—all without feeling hectic. Even in hot months like April and May, a slower pace lets you enjoy the beauty of Oman without burnout. And despite its exotic appeal, a road trip through Oman can be surprisingly budget-friendly.
