Our Travel Route Through Bolivia

We actually only visited two places in Bolivia, where we spent a total of two weeks. Unfortunately, our visit coincided with the elections, which meant we couldn’t do much for a few days. Our route included La Paz and Uyuni, from where we took several day trips. You can find these in our travel guide Bolivia.

Visa and Entry Requirements

As a Dutch citizen, you don’t need a visa for Bolivia. In Peru, you receive an exit stamp, and in Bolivia, you get an entry stamp. We didn’t have to explain what we were planning to do or when we would leave the country again, although this may differ for each traveler.

Travel Budget and Currency

Bolivia is not a very expensive country, although inflation has increased significantly in recent times. For example, we experienced a very unfavorable exchange rate when we wanted to pay for a multi-day tour in Bolivianos. Our tip is to bring US dollars for this type of tour, as no extra fees were charged when paying in dollars. In our travel budget article, you can read exactly how much we spent on our two-week itinerary through Bolivia.

Climate in Bolivia

Bolivia is one of the South American countries without a coastline, and this largely determines its climate. Due to the many high mountains, the country is essentially divided into two regions. The east can be wetter because of rainfall coming from the Amazon region, while the west is drier and higher due to the Andes. Below you can find more information about Bolivia’s climate for your preferred travel period. Also keep in mind the high UV radiation levels in Bolivia!

When Is the High Season?

High season starts during the dry winter period (the opposite of what we’re used to in the Netherlands, roughly from May/June to September). It can be a bit cooler during this time, but it’s an excellent period for trekking.

Popular Sights in Bolivia

Our travel route through Bolivia could have been much more extensive, so we only discuss the sights we personally visited. La Paz and Uyuni are absolute must-sees. The salt flats near Uyuni are the largest in the world!

Internet and Connectivity

Once again, we used an Airalo eSIM. Unfortunately, it didn’t always work perfectly, but coverage in the larger cities was sufficient. With the discount code MEIKE4854, you’ll receive €3 off your first purchase!
