Balcony Walk Oman: a Complete Guide!
One of the absolute highlights of our 12-day road trip through Oman was the Balcony Walk. Surrounded by the towering peaks of the Jabal Shams mountains, this scenic and relatively easy hike takes you along dramatic cliff edges with breathtaking views of steep canyon walls. It’s no wonder this area is often referred to as the Grand Canyon of the Arabian Peninsula! Wondering how to get there and what to expect? We’ve got all the essential tips for hiking the Balcony Walk in Oman.
Do You Need a 4×4 for the Balcony Walk in Oman?
This is probably the most frequently asked question about this hike: Is a 4×4 really necessary? Before our trip, we struggled to find a clear answer and came across many mixed reviews. So here’s our full route experience.
We started from the town of Al Hamra in a Toyota Yaris (not a 4×4) and the drive took us about 1.5 hours (roughly 50 km). Spoiler: we made it just fine without a 4×4.
The first part of the road is easy. The last 20 kilometers are where the incline begins. The initial section is paved but steep. After this, there’s an unpaved stretch of about 7 km that’s in decent condition, followed by another short paved section. The final 3 km are unpaved again, and this part is in worse condition, rocky and a bit rough. Also check out our Google Maps Oman for a more detailed route.
Still, we thought it was doable in a regular car. Some experience with mountain driving and gravel roads definitely helps. On arrival, our small car stood out in a parking lot full of 4WDs!

Final Verdict: Do You Need a 4×4?
So, is a 4×4 absolutely necessary? Not really. We saw several locals near the end of the paved section offering shuttle rides to the trailhead. They seemed to do this regularly, likely earning some money from it.
In short: no, a 4×4 is not strictly required, but make sure to check your rental agreement (many prohibit unpaved roads) and consider your own driving comfort level.
Rain in the Forecast?
Although it’s rare, we do not recommend attempting the road after rain or if rain is expected. The terrain can become slippery and dangerous. Also, aim to finish the hike well before sunset to avoid driving down in the dark.
The Balcony Walk Oman Hike Itself
As for the hike: it’s absolutely beautiful and fairly easy. It’s about 7 km round-trip with roughly 250 meters of elevation gain. The trail follows the edge of the canyon the entire way, offering stunning mountain views throughout. We never felt unsafe, but do keep in mind: there are no fences or safety barriers at any point.

Mountain Weather & Sun Exposure
At this altitude, temperatures are cooler, but the sun feels even stronger. The sun’s intensity is high throughout Oman, so wear sunscreen, and ideally, long, light clothing for added protection.
Food & Water on the Balcony Walk
At the time of our visit, there were toilets at the parking area (for a small fee), and after half a kilometer there was a small shack selling cold drinks and coffee. Still, this is a remote area, so be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks. We had no mobile reception during the hike.
Tip: We always use an eSIM from Airalo, which connects you instantly when you land. Even with this, there was no signal at the trailhead or along the hike itself, so plan accordingly.
The Conclusion: Balcony Walk Oman
We had no trouble reaching the parking area with a standard car and found the hike to be one of the most scenic in Oman. We highly recommend the Balcony Walk as part of your Oman itinerary, it’s a must for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike!
