1. Waikiki Beach

No trip to Hawaii is complete without a stop at the iconic Waikiki Beach. Rent a surfboard (often cheaper through your accommodation) and catch some easy waves. Be prepared to share the water, dozens of surfers line up here for the perfect break. It’s a beginner’s paradise (or at least in the right season) and a great place to test your skills!

2. Pearl Harbor

For a bit of history, head to Pearl Harbor. This historic site is absolutely worth visiting. It’s about an hour away by bus, and most of the area is free to explore. Keep in mind that bags aren’t allowed inside, so you’ll need to pay a small fee to store them in a locker.

Historic fact: Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7th, 1941, drawing the United States into World War II. The site honors the lives lost and provides a glimpse into this pivotal moment in history.

3. Diamond Head

For stunning views, hike to the top of Diamond Head. While the trail can get a bit crowded, it’s well-maintained and includes some stair sections. Don’t forget to book a ticket in advance (about two days ahead should suffice) and they’re flexible if you show up slightly outside your time slot.

4. Koko Head

This hike is an intense one! The trail follows an old railroad track that was used to transport supplies to WWII bunkers at the summit. With over 1,000 steps to climb, it’s a challenge, but the view from the top is more than worth it. Take your time, and don’t forget to bring water!

5. Makapuʻu Lookout

A picture-perfect spot! The Makapuʻu Lookout offers stunning views of the coastline that are well worth a stop. Your camera roll will thank you.

6. Dole Plantation

Yes, it’s touristy, but the Dole Plantation is still a fun stop. Learn all about the history of Hawaii’s pineapple industry and, of course, indulge in some delicious Dole Whip ice cream.

Fun Fact: The Dole Plantation was originally a fruit stand in the 1950s and has since grown into a major tourist attraction, showcasing Hawaii’s agricultural history.

7. Banzai Pipeline/Waimea Beach

This world-famous surf spot hosts professional surfing championships, and for good reason: the waves here are massive and form a unique “pipeline” shape as they break. Even if you’re not surfing, watching the pros in action is an experience you won’t forget.

8. Kukio Beach

One of our favorite beaches on Big Island! The soft sand and clear water make it perfect for relaxing, and if you’re lucky, you might spot whales in the distance, just like we did. Keep an eye on the lifeguard warnings, as the currents here can be strong.

9. Hapuna Beach

Another gem on Big Island, Hapuna Beach is gorgeous, though we’d rank Kukio Beach just slightly higher. Still, it’s an excellent spot for sunbathing and swimming.

10. Mauna Kea

Fancy hiking to the top of a volcano? Mauna Kea, standing at 4,200 meters (13,800 feet) above sea level, is a must for adventure seekers. From the visitor center, you can hike or drive (only with a 4×4 vehicle) to the summit. Before starting, you’ll need to register for safety reasons. Also keep in mind that you are hiking at high elevation, where altitude sickness cannot be underestimated! We started our hike a bit late and didn’t make it to the top, so plan for 7–8 hours if you’re going on foot. Either way, the experience is unforgettable!

11. Volcanoes National park

One of the highlights of Big Island is Volcanoes National Park, part of the US National Park System. If you have an annual park pass, you can enter as often as you like, a good idea since the weather here changes quickly. We visited twice and experienced completely different weather each time. Clouds often get trapped against the volcano, creating unique conditions. Don’t miss the short hikes through hardened lava, it’s like stepping onto another planet. Fun Fact: The park is home to Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes.
