San Francisco Travel Guide: What to Do and Where to Stay?
Our United States road trip west ended in San Francisco and we absolutely loved this unique city! There’s something for everyone here. A must-see is the iconic Alcatraz prison. In this San Francisco travel guide blog, we’ll share the top things to do and the best places to stay.

Where to Stay in San Francisco?
We stayed at Samesun San Francisco, right in the city center! We highly recommend this hostel. It’s clean, spacious, and even had parking space for our rental car. What more could you want? Plus, you’re just a short walk from the city’s top attractions, so you won’t need to rely on public transport or have to drive everywhere.
What to Do in San Francisco?
1. Golden Gate Bridge
You can’t miss this stunning bridge when visiting San Francisco. In this travel guide blog, you’ll find a few great photo spots you can easily reach by car. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even rent a bike and cycle across the Golden Gate. Did you know that when it was built in 1937, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world?
2. Alcatraz Island
Next up is the famous Alcatraz former prison, a prison located on an island just off the coast. We took a chance and went to the harbor, where we managed to get a ticket. In just 10 minutes, we were on a boat heading to the island! Once there, we were given an audio tour (headset included), which kept us busy for quite a while. Fun fact: Alcatraz housed some of America’s most notorious criminals, including Al Capone, in its early years.

3. Pier 39 en Fisherman’s Wharf
Pier 39 has a fun carnival-like vibe! It’s lively, full of street performers, and there’s always something happening. One of the highlights here is spotting the sea lions lounging around on the docks.
4. Lombard Street
This famous, twisty street in the middle of the city is definitely worth checking out. You can walk along it or drive down the steep, hairpin turns. If you’re walking, you might not get the full effect of the tight curves, but the view from the top is amazing! Fun fact: Lombard Street is often called the “crookedest street in the world.”

San Francisco is a city packed with history and fun, and this guide covers just the basics. There’s so much more to explore, from the colorful neighborhoods to the cool local spots.
