What to do in Kuala Lumpur?

Your trip through Malaysia is guaranteed to start or end in Kuala Lumpur. There is plenty to do in this gigantic city and you can easily stay there for a few days. Below you will find 5 things to do in Kuala Lumpur.

The Petronas Twin Towers Kuala Lumpur

Although it is no longer the tallest building in the world, the Petronas Towers are still the most famous in Kuala Lumpur. A visit should therefore not be missed! Did you know that the towers owe their name to the country’s largest fuel supplier? We found the building very beautiful, especially in the evening. The towers are then beautifully illuminated and there is also a small fountain show in the park behind it. You can also walk straight into the building, as the first floors consist of a large and modern shopping center. It is also possible to visit the connecting footbridge (for a fee). We did not do this, because we thought the view from the KL Tower was much nicer!

KL Tower

Another tall building: the KL tower. Although not as high as the Petronas Towers, this tower actually gives a much better view of the city. The tower is located on a hill and you can also get all the way to the top. We thought it was really worth it, especially for the entrance fee of RM21 per person. There was a promotional discount at the time, but even if the entrance fee is twice as high, it is still a no-brainer! Tip: do not take the tickets for the highest floor (Sky Deck), but the Observation Deck. The big advantage is that you can go straight upstairs to this floor (it is much quieter here) and it makes no difference to the view. The only disadvantage of the Observation Deck is that you are standing inside.

Near this tower you will also find the Eco Forest, a small piece of preserved jungle in the middle of the city. We did not visit this, because we have several jungle trails planned in the interior (Taman Negara NP). We always find unspoilt nature more beautiful, but if you only stay in Kuala Lumpur it might be nice to get an impression of the rainforests in the country!

Batu Caves

Admittedly, it is a bit touristy. Still, we thought a visit to the Batu Caves was worthwhile. You can walk through the caves via the brightly colored stairs (completely free, August 2023). There are also several temples. What we liked best was the monkeys that walk around everywhere here. But be careful: they will take your stuff, especially if it is edible! It is a bit further from the center, but you can get there in no time with Grab.

Pasar Jan Petaling

The north of the city mainly consists of modern skyscrapers, hotels and large shopping centers. However, if you go a little further south, the cityscape changes. We really enjoyed walking through the busy Pasar Jan Petaling market. Nearby you will also find a beautiful temple: the Hindi Temple.

Marini’s on 57 Kuala Lumpur

In a city like Kuala Lumpur it is quite nice to end with a drink at a rooftop bar. We chose Marini’s on 57. The drinks are quite expensive, but you get a free view of the Petronas Towers from the 57th floor in return!

We stayed in Kuala Lumpur for a total of five days, but mainly because Malaysia was part of our world trip and we could use some rest. Two or three days is probably enough to get an impression of the city. After Kuala Lumpur the journey through Malaysia really started for us! By the way, we stayed in Scarletz Suites. This accommodation had a great location and a beautful pool!
