Accommodation is often one of the biggest expenses, especially in such a remote and extreme destination. But don’t worry: if you’re looking for Svalbard places to stay without breaking the bank, there are some surprisingly budget-friendly options out there.
What to Expect from Svalbard Places to Stay
Let’s be realistic, Svalbard isn’t Southeast Asia. Budget accommodation here still means spending around €120–€150 per night. That might not sound cheap, but in Svalbard terms, it’s a good deal. For this price, you can usually get a private room with a shared bathroom and breakfast included. It’s simple, clean, and perfectly fine for travelers who spend most of their time exploring rather than lounging in their room.
Best Places to Stay in Svalbard
After plenty of research, we found that Nybyen, just outside Longyearbyen, offers the best value for money. Hotels in the center of Longyearbyen often charge several hundred euros per night, well beyond most travel budgets. Nybyen, on the other hand, is home to two well-rated accommodations that are great for budget-conscious travelers.
Gjestehuset 102 – One of the Best Budget Options in Svalbard
We stayed 4 nights at Gjestehüset 102 and paid just over €500 in total. The room was small but comfortable, with shared bathrooms and a decent breakfast included. It’s not luxury, but it has everything you need for a good night’s rest after a day of Arctic adventures. Just be aware: it’s about a 30-minute walk from Nybyen to the town center, but the path is well-marked and within Longyearbyen’s safe zone (no rifle required).
Coal Miners’ Cabins – A Solid Alternative
Right next to Gjestehuset 102, you’ll find Coal Miners’ Cabins, another great option for travelers on a budget. It’s very similar in terms of price, facilities, and location. If Gjestehuset 102 is fully booked, this is a great backup that offers the same style of stay.
