Langkawi Malaysia: the Best Travel Tips

Langkawi is one of the popular destinations during a trip of Malaysia. There is plenty to see and to do. What surprised us most here are the extensive night markets with delicious freshly prepared food. Curious about what you can do on this island? In this article you will find a complete guide for Langkawi island Malaysia.

How to Get to Langkawi Malaysia?

Nowadays, the easiest way to reach Langkawi is by plane from Kuala Lumpur or Penang. We traveled by plane from Penang (Georgetown) to Langkawi. The flight does not take long and is often very cheap (and bookable just a few days before takeoff)! Previously there should have been a boat connection between Penang and Langkawi, but this no longer seems to exist.

Transport and Accommodation on Langkawi Malaysia

The easiest (and most fun) is to get around Langkawi by scooter. However, we would advise everyone to check whether you are allowed to drive one since it is often not included in a standard license for cars. It is also useful to install the Grab app on your phone, we used it a lot in the country in general. This is the Uber version for Asia, which makes it easy to arrange a taxi.

The best place to stay on Langkawi is of course somewhere close to a beautiful beach. However, we found a really nice stay just near the airport (Sabandy House B&B), which unfortunately isn’t available anymore. Check out some other options at Langkawi.

Guide for Activities on Langkawi

We stayed on Langkawi for three days (4 nights) and did multiple activities.

Beaches on Langkawi Malaysia

Spend a day driving a scooter or taxi along the various beaches. We chose Pantai Chenang and Tanjun Ru. The beaches are often very quiet and you can eat and drink cheaply. Along the beaches you will also find several shops that offer water activities. With a scooter you can tour around the island in one day and you can stop at various places for a short walk. By the way, we think the beaches at the Perhentians are much more beautiful!

Night Markets on Langkawi

The night markets were our absolute favorite in Langkawi. There is one every evening and you can find the nearest one by simply typing your location + night market on Google Maps (or find them on our Google Maps travel guide Malaysia). You can try many different local dishes for a very small price by just strolling over the market and picking your favorite market stalls. The food we chose was well prepared, however, keep in mind that there is always a slight chance of getting sick from the food, especially raw uncooked things.

Telaga Tujuh Waterval and Oriental Village

We had a taxi drop us off at Oriental Village, from where we started the walk towards the Telaga Tujuh waterfall. Not super spectacular, but you can have a nice view and cool off in the water! The waterfall has formed a kind of natural swimming pool (with slide).

Even though Oriental Village is not very large, we still strolled around for a while. It was just adorable to view the many monkey groups that live here. We haven’t been to the famous sky bridge ourselves, but the entrance to the attraction is located in Oriental Village. The views must be beautiful, but this attraction is very weather dependent. As soon as there is a strong wind or rain, they close everything. And in our case, it gave monsoon showers that day.

After Langkawi you can easily fly back to Penang, from where you can travel back to Georgetown. Or fly to the capital Kuala Lumpur or even Phuket in Thailand. Curious about the complete Malaysia itinerary? Then see here where you can travel in 3-4 weeks.
