Magnetic Island Australia Day Trip Tips
Are you traveling along Australia’s east coast and planning a stop in Townsville? Don’t miss the chance to explore Magnetic Island! This guide provides all the essential Magnetic Island Australia day trip tips to help you spot wildlife, hike scenic trails, and make the most of your visit to this stunning destination.

Getting to Magnetic Island
One of the first steps in your Magnetic Island Australia day trip is the ferry ride from Townsville. In November 2023, the cost is 41 AUD per adult, plus an additional 9 AUD parking fee near the harbor since free parking isn’t available nearby. The journey to Magnetic Island takes about 20 minutes, making it perfect for a day trip.
Transportation on Magnetic Island
While buses are available on Magnetic Island, there’s no need to rent a car. For us, walking appeared to be the best way to experience the island. You can choose walking paths alongside the roads or venture onto forest trails for a more adventurous route. The Island is small enough for making it possible to explore on foot. However, if you are not so much into longer hikes, there are plenty of buses departing from the harbor to the scenic spots on the island.
Best Hiking Trails Magnetic Island
For hiking enthusiasts, a visit to Magnetic Island wouldn’t be complete without trying the Fort Walk. During our day trip to Magnetic Island, we hiked a total of 15 kilometers, heading to the island’s north and back. The Fort Walk is a highlight, offering not only WWII-era ruins but also panoramic views of the island. On our return to Nelly Bay (the ferry terminal), we took a different route to explore more of Magnetic Island’s natural beauty.
Where to Find Koala’s and Wallabies?
One of the top Magnetic Island Australia day trip tips is to know where to spot the famous rock wallabies and koalas. Koalas are a bit trickier to spot, as they sleep high in eucalyptus trees that match their fur. The best chance of seeing one is during the Fort Walk. If you see a group of people staring at a tree, it’s likely they’ve found a koala. The adorable rock wallabies, on the other hand, are quite easy to find. After disembarking the ferry, head right along the waterfront. Near the end, you’ll reach a scenic viewpoint with rocky areas where the wallabies love to gather. Geoffrey Bay is another reliable spot. Tip: use our free Google Maps travel guide Australia, which includes all the top locations to spot koalas, wallabies, and more.
What to Bring for Your Magnetic Island Day Trip
To ensure your Magnetic Island day trip is smooth and enjoyable, be sure to pack at least some basic needs. Snacks: While shops are available, prices on the island are higher than on the mainland. Water: While refill stations are available on the island, the water doesn’t always taste great. Sun Protection: Sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses are must-haves, especially on the Fort Walk, where there’s limited shade.
Extend Your Trip
