Australia

For one month we traveled through Australia in a camper, following nearly the entire East Coast route. It really was a great adventure! Spotting wildlife, camping for free and enjoying total freedom with a campervan, it was the perfect way to discover Australia! On this page, you’ll find all our travel information for Australia.

De Best Travel Route for Australia

Australia is a huge country with so much to see, so travel itineraries are large! Most people choose the east coast, especially for their first visit to the country. So we did the same and made a trip through this side of Australia. From the tropical climate in Cairns we travelled all the way to the south of the country.

For a roadtrip through Australia we would recommend a campervan instead of a regular car. Although these vehicles are more expensive to rent, you are more flexible to stay the night along the main route at the so called rest areas. Some of them even are for free, but are definitely not suitable for camping with a tent. We rented through Spaceships!

Visa and Entry Requirements

As visitors from the Netherlands, we needed a valid eVisitor (and of course our passports). Since this electronic visa is limited to only a list of countries and entry requirements may change over time, always check which requirements hold for you for entering the country. We did apply directly through the official website of the Australian government and the application was for free!

Travel Budget and Currency

Traveling through Australia can be quite expensive. We travelled in summer period (november) and could always use the campervan for overnight stay. Sometimes we had even free campsites (rest areas), however sometimes there were limited options so we chose the budget friendly Showgrounds. The currency in the country is the Australian Dollar (AUD).

Climate and Weather in Australia

Australia is located at the southern hemisphere, which means Christmas in summer and winter in August. Especially the northern part of our travel route lies in tropical area, whereas the southern part of the route is more in moderate climate. Obviously, the inland desert from Australia is very dry!

Peak and Low Season

Peak season is mainly in the summer months from December and January. We did visit Australia in November ourselves, just before peak season however still with nice weather during late spring.

Popular Attractions

The most impressive thing about Australia was the wildlife for us! You won’t find so many kangaroos and koalas anywhere else in the world! Furthermore, the entire coastline along the east coast is very beautiful, and a visit to Sydney should not be missed either.

Health and Safety

Australia mainly consists of remote areas, however the cities along the east coast are densely populated. So you have to be a bit careful mainly in the cities, but that applies to every major city in the world. What we noticed most is that there are often permanent residents at the free overnight rest areas, especially the ones closer to larger cities. Although this never caused us any problems, you could still feel uncomfortable. Closer to larger cities, we chose (paid) showgrounds instead.

As far as health is concerned, we have no personal experience, because we did not get sick during our trip. It is always advisable to read up on it in advance and to take out good travel insurance. Especially in the tropical north of the country, you have to be more careful with mosquitoes. Poisonous jellyfish (the so-called stinger) can occur along the coast.

Culture and Traditions in Australia

We were really impressed by the friendly locals that were often open for a quick chat. Especially other travellers (many people traveling with trailers or caravans) were always curious about our home country and had tips for what to visit most of the time. Of course, it is nice to learn something about the Aboriginals once you are visiting Australia.

Internet and connectivity

We used an Esim during our travel period and were quite happy with it. Although you could also use a local sim-card at the airport of arrival, Esim is just easier as you are connected the moment you land!

Looking for a data package? We mostly use the Esim plan from Airalo for connectivity in foreign countries. Use the code MEIKE4854 for a €3,- discount on your first purchase!
