Spain

Spain is one of the most popular summer destinations in Europe. The country is beautiful and diverse and the people are very friendly. We visited Spain multiple times already, both the main country and the Canary Islands. On this page you will find all our travel information about Spain!

The Best Travel Route for Spain

Spain has a lot of different options for nice travel itineraries. Our route went through central Spain all the way to the south. On our way back, we visited both Portugal and Spain’s west coast. We also visited some of the Canarias. On each island you can visit everything on a day trip, as distances are quite small.

Visa and Entry Requirements

Spain is part of the EU, so the regulations for entering the country are similar to other EU countries. There are few to no border controls between countries, once you are in the Union, but regulations may change quickly. We advise to always check the latest travel advice for your specific situation!

Travel Budget and Currency

Similar to many other Southern European countries, Spain is just slighly cheaper than the Northern part of the EU. However, it is not a budget destination either. Currency is similar to other EU countries: the Euro.

Climate and Weather in Spain

Spain has a mediterranean climate, at least in the southernmost part of the country. The central part can get really hot and dry in summer, whereas the western part along the Atlantic coast is much cooler due to the ocean. In mountaneous areas there may be snow expected in winter. Even in the southernmost Sierra Nevada, there is a ski resorts from where you can see the coastline on a clear day.

Peak and Low Season

Most tourists visit Spain in the summer months July and August during the main holidays season in Europe. However, low season is becoming more and more busy as well, since vacation time is becoming more flexible in current working conditions. In winter months there is a ski season, however it is not as busy as the Alps.

Popular Travel Attractions

Besides cosy villages and ancient cities there are many activities for outdoor travelling. We especially would recommend the Caminito del Rey near Malaga and the Ruta del Cares in the Pyrenees.

Health and Safety Information

We should consider both health and safety quite similar to other European countries. Especially the larger cities you should be extra careful to avoid small crimes (for instance always lock your car and don’t leave expensive stuff), but we think there is not much to worry about in the country.

Culture and Traditions in Spain

What struck us most about Spain is the siesta. Don’t expect shops to be open in the middle of the day, especially more inlands away from touristic hotspots. Especially dinner (tapas) happens a lot later in the evening than what you may expect from your home country, as temperatures only drop later in the evening.

Internet and Connectivity

We mostly had good signal in Spain, where sometimes it would get a little weaker in remote areas mainly in moutaneous areas. Looking for a data package? We mostly use the Esim plan from Airalo for connectivity in foreign countries. Use the code MEIKE4854 for a €3,- discount on your first purchase!
