Norway

Scandinavia is becoming increasingly popular as a holiday destination, especially for those who love piece and nature. Although most tourists visit the country in the summer, we did just the opposite and went to the country during winter. We visited the country even multiple times already. Besides the fjords in the southern part, we also saw the northern lights in Tromso and even visited the Svalbard archipelago really close to the north pole!

The Best Travel Route for Norway
Norway is quite diverse and especially from south to north it is a really stretched country. As it is quite a big country, there are so many travel routes you could make, depending on your preferences. As we live quite close to the country, we did a winter road trip through the southern part of Norway with our own car. Further up north, you have the chance to experience the polar night or midnight sun, as part of the country is above the polar circle. During the winter of 2025, we even visited Svalbard, the northernmost place we ever visited at a latitude of 78 degrees north!

Visa and Entry Requirements
Although Norway is not part of the EU, the regulations for entering the country are quite similar. We advise to always check the latest travel advice for your specific situation!
Travel Budget and Currency
Norway is quite expensive, compared to other EU (north west) countries, prices are higher, especially for some typical types of food and drinks. We could pay by card most of the time during our visits. The currency is the Norwegian Kroner (NOK).

Climate and Weather in Norway
Although Norway is located really far north, it doesn’t get as cold as you may expected. This has all to do with the warm Gulf Stream, which transports quite warm sea water to these northern regions. Nevertheless, winters are snowy and summers are never really warm. More inland the climate is not as much affected by the sea and in the fjords there is much more rain than further inland.
Peak and Low Season
Most tourists visit Norway in the summer months July and August. However, skiing in Scandinavia is becoming more and more popular due to climate change, so in winter months there is more and more tourism as well. Nevertheless, crowds are far smaller than popular countries in south and central Europe.
Popular Travel Attractions
When traveling to Norway, you’re probably attracted to the beautiful nature of Norway. Especially the fjords along the west coast are quite unique for Europe. So don’t be surprised as Norway is best visited for travelers who love hiking. There are so many trails out there! We visited one of the most popular hikes in the whole country: Preikestolen.

Health and Safety Information
Both health and safety are quite good in Norway, however, always think of the small things like locking your car etc. to avoid small crimes. We never felt unsafe in the country. We’d advise to always check the current health and safety conditions for your specific situation and get some advice from a medical specialist when needed.
Culture and Traditions in Norway
As we only visited Norway for the stunning landscapes, we did not get a specific vibe on culture in the country. As the country is really large and quite low in population, expect small villages most of the time in vast areas of nature.
Internet and Connectivity in Norway
We mostly had good signal in Norway, where sometimes it would get a little weaker in remote areas both on roads and hiking trails.
