Italy

Italy is known for its delicious food. Espressos and cappuccinos are nowhere as good as in this country. Besides food, there are also many authentic cities and a great diversity of nature. There are the Alps in the north, but also the lesser-known Apennines in the middle of the country. We have been to Italy several times, both in summer and in winter. We also made one larger tour through the country once, from Napoli to the Austrian border. Here you’ll find all our travel information about Italy.

Visa and Entry Requirements

Italy is part of the EU, so the regulations for entering the country are similar to other EU countries. There are few to no border controls between countries, once you are in the Union, but regulations may change quickly. We advise to always check the latest travel advice for your specific situation!

Travel Budget and Currency

Similar to many other Southern European countries, Italy is just slighly cheaper than the Northern part of the EU. However, it is not a budget destination either. Camp sites are relatively expensive and contain really small places compared to neighbouring countries. The northern part of Italy is much more expensive than central and southern Italy. Currency is similar to other EU countries: the Euro.

Climate and Weather in Italy

Italy has a mediterranean climate and especially in summer months it can get really hot during the day. In mountaneous areas there may be snow expected in winter, especially in the Alps, but also the lesser known Apennines for instance.

Peak and Low Season

Most tourists visit Italy in the summer months July and August during the main holidays season in Europe. However, low season is becoming more and more busy as well, since vacation time is becoming more flexible in current working conditions. In winter months there is a ski season, especially in the Italian Alps.

Popular Travel Attractions

Italy is a perfect destination fo outdoor activities. Besides the Italian Alps, we would also recommend the less busy Apennines.

Health and Safety Information

We should consider both health and safety quite similar to other European countries. Especially the larger cities you should be extra careful to avoid small crimes (for instance always lock your car and don’t leave expensive stuff), but we think there is not much to worry about in the country.

Culture and Traditions in Italy

What struck us most about Italy is that people value family and close circles of friends much more. Although, especially in traffic, you can quickly get the feeling that the locals do not come across as very friendly. However, when you have a chat, that often changes quickly.

Internet and Connectivity

We mostly had good signal in Italy, where sometimes it would get a little weaker in remote areas mainly in moutaneous areas.
