Iceland

Iceland is a beautiful island in the North Atlantic Ocean, also known as the country of fire and ice! With its volcanoes, geysers, glaciers, and waterfalls, the country has a unique landscape. Iceland does not have a lot of inhabitants and most people live in the capital, Reykjavik. The country is located quite close to the arctic, which means the difference between summer and winter is huge! We visited the country in the spring of 2022 and put together the most important travel information for Iceland!

The Best Travel Route for Iceland
We drove the entire Ring Road in about 10 days. This main road is easily navigable with a normal (not 4×4) rental car and is ideal for a beautiful road trip around the country in 10 to 14 days. Want more details? Check out our travel route and Google Maps travel guide below!
Road Trip Ringroad Iceland 10 Days: Our Itinerary

Renting a car is a must, as public transportation outside of Reykjavik is almost non-existent. We always rent our car through Sunnycars. The give an all-in price with full insurance and free cancellation up to one hour before pick-up.
Visa and Entry Requirements
As EU citizens, we did not need a visa for a stay of less than 90 days in Iceland. Always make sure to check the current entry requirements for Iceland on the official local websites.
Travel Budget and Currency
Iceland is an expensive country, as it is located quite remote and many things need to be imported. However, we were able to keep costs low by cooking for ourselves and staying in hostels sometimes. Renting a car was most expensive for us. The currency is the Icelandic króna (ISK) and we could pay by card almost everywhere.

Climate and Weather in Iceland
Iceland has a cool climate, with mild summers and cold winters. The weather in Iceland can change very quickly throughout the year, even in summer, so brace yourself for rainy days. In summer, you can experience the midnight sun, while in winter, it is dark almost all of the day.

Peak and Low Season
The high season in Iceland runs from June to August, during summer when you have the best chance for good weather. These are also the busiest months of the year. The northern lights are best viewed in winter. We went in the spring and thought it was a great time, as it was relatively quiet and more affordable. Unfortunately, we didn’t see any puffins during this period.
