Thailand

For us, Thailand was one of the first destinations in Asia. We started our journey in Phuket, traveling through southern Thailand and to Chiang Mai. The overnight train back to Bngkok was an incredible and unique experience that should be on everyone’s bucket list. On this page, you’ll find all of our travel information for Thailand!

De Best Travel Route for Thailand

Thailand is a large and diverse country, where you can travel around for as long as you want. Thailand is a cheap destination, comparable to other countries in the region, so a longer trip won’t take your whole budget. We stayed in the country for about a month and made a diverse tour where we were able to visit most of the highlights.

Visa and Entry Requirements

Our passport was enough for a visit less than 30 days, so we did not need to apply for a visa. Always check whether you need to apply for a visa or meet other entry requirements, as rules can change quickly and can differ per situation.

Travel Budget and Currency

Thailand is quite a cheap destination, similar to other Asian countries. The currency is the Thai Baht (THB) and we could pay by card surprisingly often.

Climate and Weather in Thailand

Thailand is located in tropical area and has a dry and wet season. Now mousson season does not necessarily mean it’s raining cats and dogs continuously, it’s more like short but heavy showers in the afternoon. Not every part of Thailand has the wet season at the same time, so on a somewhat larger tour you will definitely have to deal with it, no matter the time of visit. We were in the middle of the wet season in Phuket and actually it was not that bad.

Peak and Low Season

Thailand is a really popular destination for travellers all around the world, especially Europeans. Although the holiday season (July and August) tend to be busier, there are probably always lots of tourists in the country. Wet season obviously is less crowded,

In Thailand you can do many different activities in a month! From relaxed snorkeling to cool jungle hikes and from visiting temples to a Thai cooking course, everything is possible! We tried to make our tour as diverse as possible!

Health and Safety

We found Thailand to be safe and were always in comfort in both the big cities and more remote areas, both during the day and in the evening. There is so much tourism, that you’ll feel quite comfortable easily. Of course, you do have to be a bit careful, especially in the major cities and busier areas.

We did not get sick during our trip to Thailand. As for food and drinks, we did not drink tap water (and no ice cubes in your drink!) and looked at Google Maps reviews before visiting a restaurant. We did also have dinner at the food markets, which was a very nice experience!

As for protection from mosquitos and other tropical diseases, check carefully which advice applies to your situation in advance, so that you are well prepared for your trip. It is always advisable to seek advice from a specialist!

Culture and Traditions in Thailand

The most common religion in Thailand is Buddhism and this is reflected in innumerable colorful temples that the country has to offer. The local population is incredibly friendly, even in the crowded tourist areas!

Tip: learn the Thai Wai before greeting people. With your hands flat against each other, you make a small bow (both for greeting and thanking). The local population will really appreciate it!

Internet and connectivity

We used a local sim during our travel period and it worked fine in most of the country (except for some remote areas). Looking for a data package? We nowadays use the Esim plan from Airalo for connectivity in foreign countries almost always! Use the code MEIKE4854 for a €3,- discount on your first purchase!
