Bali

During our world trip in 2023 we decided to take a break at Bali after the trek to Mount Everest Base Camp. Although it is quite touristy here, both islands are worth a visit to our opinion. You will find beautiful beaches, temples and a relaxing culture (except for the importunate taxi drivers perhaps). We collected the most important travel information for Bali on this page!

De Best Travel Route for Bali

Bali is quite compact and the most accessible areas are in the south. From the airport, many travelers stay at the beaches of Kuta and Denpasar. Do you want to see more of the island? Then it is definitely worth going to Ubud for several days. From there you can do day trips to Mount Agung, for example. The boat to Nusa Penida leaves from Sanur.

Visa and Entry Requirements

Bali is part of Indonesia and for that country we needed a visa in addition to our passport. We were able to arrange this on site (visa on arrival), but always check to be sure whether this also applies to your situation as well, because rules can change quickly.

Travel Budget and Currency

Bali is so crowded with tourism, that prices are higher than other countries in the region. Still, Bali is an affordable destination. The currency is the Indonesian Rupia (IDR) and we could pay by card surprisingly often.

Peak and Low Season

Bali is a really popular destination for travellers all around the world, especially Europeans and Australians. Although the holiday season (July, August, December and January) tend to be busier, there are probably always lots of tourists in the country.

Popular Attractions

Besides lots of rice fields, there is also a lot to see in Bali in terms of culture. Definitely visit one of the beautiful temples, but don’t forget to stop at a local coffee plantation! We found the beaches most beautiful on Nusa Penida and the interior more beautiful on Bali!

Health and Safety

We found Bali to be quite safe and were always in comfort in both larger villages and more remote areas, both during the day and in the evening. There is so much tourism, that you’ll feel quite comfortable easily. Of course, you do have to be a bit careful, especially in the major cities and busier areas.

We did not get sick during our trip to Bali. As for food and drinks, we did not drink tap water (and no ice cubes in your drink!) and looked at Google Maps reviews before visiting a restaurant. There is quite a large chance on the so called Bali Belly, as many tourists suffer from intestinal problems for at least a few days, so be careful about your dinner choices.

As for protection from mosquitos and other tropical diseases, check carefully which advice applies to your situation in advance, so that you are well prepared for your trip. It is always advisable to seek advice from a specialist!

Culture and Traditions in Bali

The most striking thing about Bali is of course the influence of Hinduism. Although it is not the largest religion in Indonesia, it is definitely the largest one in Bali. The temples, daily offering and building style all refer to the culture, making it quite unique regarding religion.

Internet and connectivity

We used a local sim during our travel period and it worked fine in most of the country (except for some remote areas). Looking for a data package? We nowadays use the Esim plan from Airalo for connectivity in foreign countries almost always! Use the code MEIKE4854 for a €3,- discount on your first purchase!
