Malaysia

Our first country to visit in Asia was Malaysia. And this country has surprised us in many ways! Tea plantations, jungle trekkings, huge cities and even the most beautiful beaches we had ever seen. We enjoyed snorkeling on the Perhentian Islands and the night markets where you can taste the excellent Asian cuisine! On this page you will find all our travel information for Malaysia!

De Best Travel Route for Malaysia
Malaysia is a diverse country. On the peninsula you can see quite a lot in a relatively short time of about three weeks. Public transport is quite reliable and easy to book, so there is no need for a rental car. During our trip we visited Kuala Lumpur, the Cameron Highlands, Taman Negara, the Perhentians and Langkawi!

Visa and Entry Requirements
Our passport was enough for a visit less than 90 days, so we did not need to apply for a visa. Always check whether you need to apply for a visa or meet other entry requirements, as rules can change quickly and can differ per situation.
Travel Budget and Currency
Malaysia is quite a cheap destination, similar to other Asian countries. The currency is the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) and we could pay by card surprisingly often.

Climate and Weather in Malaysia
Malaysia is located in tropical area and has a dry and wet season. Now mousson season does not necessarily mean it’s raining cats and dogs continuously, it’s more like short but heavy showers in the afternoon. Not every part of Malaysia has the wet season at the same time, so on a somewhat larger tour you will definitely have to deal with it, no matter the time of visit. Our tip is to plan your visit in the dry season on the east side, as the Perhentians are closed in the rain season.

Peak and Low Season
Malaysia is becoming more popular, however still less crowded with tourists compared to Thailand. Although the holiday season (July and August) tend to be busier, there are probably always lots of tourists in the country. Wet season obviously is less crowded,
Popular Attractions
In Malaysia you can do many different activities in a month! From relaxed snorkeling to cool jungle hikes and from visiting temples to local food experience at the nice food markets, everything is possible! We tried to make our tour as diverse as possible!

Health and Safety
We found Malaysia to be safe and were always in comfort in both the big cities and more remote areas, both during the day and in the evening. There is quite a lot of tourism, so you’ll feel quite comfortable easily. Of course, you do have to be a bit careful, especially in the major cities and busier areas.
We did not get sick during our trip to Malaysia. As for food and drinks, we did not drink tap water (and no ice cubes in your drink!) and looked at Google Maps reviews before visiting a restaurant. We did also have dinner at the food markets, which was a very nice experience!
As for protection from mosquitos and other tropical diseases, check carefully which advice applies to your situation in advance, so that you are well prepared for your trip. It is always advisable to seek advice from a specialist!
Culture and Traditions in Malaysia
Malaysia is super diverse! You will find Malay, Chinese and Indian influences and you will notice that everywhere: from the food to the parties and religions. English is surprisingly well spoken.
Internet and connectivity
We used a local sim during our travel period and it worked fine in most of the country (except for some remote areas). Looking for a data package? We nowadays use the Esim plan from Airalo for connectivity in foreign countries almost always! Use the code MEIKE4854 for a €3,- discount on your first purchase!
