Portugal

As a sunny destination within Europe, Portugal is an excellent choice for a summer holiday. We visited Portugal during a road trip through Spain and Portugal, driving along the mainland coast. In the summer of 2025, we flew to the Azores, an island group in the Atlantic Ocean belonging to Portugal. On this page, we’ve gathered all the essential travel information about Portugal (specifically the Azores) so you can plan your own trip.

Visa and Entry Requirements

As EU citizens, we didn’t need a visa to enter Portugal. Always check whether you require a visa or have to meet other entry requirements before your trip. For the most up-to-date information, consult the latest travel advice from official sources.

Travel Budget and Currency

Like many Southern European destinations, Portugal is slightly cheaper than the Netherlands, though it’s certainly not a true budget destination. The Azores, however, are surprisingly affordable. Especially considering they’re an island group. Portugal uses the euro, making payments straightforward for many European travelers.

Climate in Portugal

Portugal tends to be a bit cooler than neighboring Spain, largely due to its stronger maritime influences. There are also differences between the south and the west of the mainland. The Azores have yet another climate altogether — a near-permanent high-pressure system creates mild and pleasant weather year-round. Still, rain can be frequent, and it’s not unusual to experience all four seasons in a single day (or hour).

When Is High Season?

High season generally aligns with the European school holiday periods, with the summer months remaining the busiest. Periods outside of summer, such as the May holidays, are becoming increasingly popular. The Azores are still a relatively undiscovered destination, so they rarely feel crowded.

Populair Attractions

Beyond charming villages and beautiful cities, Portugal offers plenty for outdoor enthusiasts. In the Azores, you can enjoy stunning hikes and scenic viewpoints. Whale watching is also a very popular activity, though we had to skip it due to limited time.

Safety and Health

We didn’t find Portugal to be any less safe than other European destinations. In bigger cities, it’s best to use common sense, as you would anywhere. On the Azores, we always felt completely safe and had no problem carrying our belongings openly.

Culture and Traditions

Culturally, Portugal isn’t drastically different from the Netherlands, so you won’t experience much in the way of culture shock.

Internet and Connectivity

Mobile coverage is similar to other European countries, and you’ll likely be able to use your existing phone plan in Portugal. On the Azores, we had strong coverage everywhere (5G).
