Hiking the Gola di Gorropu Sardinia
During our road trip through Sardinia, we visited the stunning Gola di Gorropu, a breathtaking gorge on the eastern side of the island. Accessible only by foot, this natural wonder offers an unforgettable hiking experience. In this guide, we’ll share everything you need to know for hiking the Gola di Gorropu.
Where to Stay?
We stayed at Hotel Gorropu, conveniently located near the starting point of the hike. While the hotel is a bit pricey, it offers easy access to the trailhead. If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, there’s a campground situated right next to the hotel.
Starting Point of the Hike
The hike begins directly across the road from Passo Ghenna Silana, making it easily accessible if you’re staying at the hotel or campground. There’s also a large parking area for those coming from elsewhere. The trail is well-marked and begins with a gradual descent. The first section is relatively easy, following a well-maintained path through beautiful natural surroundings. Toward the end of the descent, the trail becomes steeper, but it’s still manageable.

You’ll find the entrance to the Gorropu Gorge on your left, marked by a ticket booth where you’ll need to pay €5 per person. Helmets are also available for added safety, especially if you plan to explore deeper into the gorge.
Exploring the Gola di Gorropu
Before entering the gorge, you’ll receive some fascinating information about its unique features. The canyon walls reach a towering height of 888 meters, while the narrowest section is only 4 meters wide.
Once inside, you can choose from three marked routes:
Green Route: This is the easiest and most accessible path, marked with green dots on the rocks. It’s perfect for most visitors and allows you to appreciate the gorge’s natural beauty without technical challenges.
Yellow Route: Slightly more challenging, the yellow route involves some scrambling and navigating over rocks, making it suitable for those with a bit more hiking experience.
Red Route: This is the most difficult section and requires both a guide and climbing gear. We attempted a small portion of the red route, but it quickly became clear that it wasn’t feasible without proper equipment and experience.

Additional Tips Hiking Gola di Gorropu
