Tips Hike Monte Cinto Corsica

In the summer of 2022 we made a road trip Corsica. We wanted to climb the highest mountain on the island: Monte Cinto. In this article you will find tips for the hike to Monte Cinto (from the south side) to make your ascent a success.

1. Ascent from Two Sides

You can climb Monte Cinto from two sides: from the north side and the south side. We climbed the top via the south side and that seems to be a more difficult route than the north side. We chose this side because we found a nice campsite that allowed us to sleep close to the start of the route.

2. Take Enough Water

It is of course very obvious to take enough water with you when you go on a hike. However, don’t underestimate how much time you spend in full sun when climbing Monte Cinto. You’ll need at least 2 liters and even more! Along the way you can no longer refill. Does it feel unsafe to fill your normal drinking bottle here? Then use the water-to-go bottles. This contains a special filter that immediately purifies the water when you want to drink it.

3. Bring Long Clothes

If you don’t want to walk around with sunburned skin the day after, wear thin long clothing (and take some sun block). There are hardly any places on the hiking route to the top of Monte Cinto where you can hide in the shade for a while.

4. Wear a Cap or Hat (with string)

Besides wearing long clothing for protection from the sun, a cap or hat is useful. However, the higher you get, the harder the wind blows and the more you have to climb up the mountain. Don’t forget to bring a string as well, as it gets quite windy when climbing higher altitudes.

5. Book an Accommodation Close to the Starting Point of the Hike

After a long day of walking, it is nice not to have to drive a long way to your accommodation. We chose to stay at the campsite U Monte Cinto right at the starting point of the walk. The campsite owners were very friendly and were happy to answer our questions about the hike and the surrounding area.

The ascent to the top of Monte Cinto is a challenge. Climbing gear is not required, however it sometimes felt more of a climbing expedition rather than a hike, especially from the south side.
